Version 0.6: Enhanced Navigation and Fluid Animations
Version 0.6 Is Here!
We're excited to announce the release of version 0.6, focusing on significant user interface and experience improvements. This update is designed to make navigating your data flows more intuitive and visually seamless.
Key Updates in This Version:
- Fluid Schema Transitions: We've introduced smooth animations when switching between the main chain flow and individual BTEQ script views. This creates a more polished and less disorienting user experience as you dive into the details of your ETL processes.
- New Navigation Bar: The previous tab-based system has been replaced with a more powerful and intuitive navigation bar. This bar includes "Home" and "Back" buttons, making it easier to move between different levels of your data flow without losing context.
- Shape and Layout Adjustments: We've made some subtle but important changes to the positioning and ordering of certain shapes within the diagrams to improve clarity and logical flow.
We believe these enhancements will make the tool feel more responsive and easier to use. As always, we welcome your feedback on these new features!

Version 0.5: A More Refined and Insightful Experience
The evolution of Data Flow Visualizer continues! Following the recent updates, I've been focused on refining the user experience and laying the groundwork for deeper analytical capabilities. This version 0.5 is all about improving visual clarity and starting to unlock the rich metadata within your scripts.
Thank you for following the journey. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new:
Visual and Layout Enhancements
Clarity is key, and this update brings significant improvements to how your data flows are presented:
- New Custom Icons: We've expanded our library of custom icons! Now, specific BTEQ commands like
CREATE TABLE
,INSERT
,SELECT
,DELETE
, andDROP TABLE
have their own unique icons. This makes identifying operations within a flow faster and more intuitive. - Intelligent Schema Spacing: The layout algorithm has been refined. The distance between nodes in the diagrams is now adjusted based on the type of command, providing a cleaner, more organized, and easier-to-read visualization, especially in complex scripts.
The First Step Towards Query-Level Metadata
While the "Chain Flow" view already provides metadata at the file level, the real magic happens inside the scripts. I'm excited to announce that the foundation for a much-requested feature has been laid.
"The backend is now capable of analyzing and extracting metadata for each individual query. This is the first and most critical step toward allowing you to click on any command within a BTEQ diagram and see its specific details."
This is a major "under-the-hood" enhancement that will soon power a more interactive and insightful analysis experience. The journey to transform this tool into a true documentation and debugging aid continues!
As always, your feedback is crucial. Let me know what you think of the new icons and what kind of metadata you'd find most useful at the query level.

Version 0.4: A Smarter Core Engine & Deeper Insights
Under the Hood: A More Powerful and Insightful Parser
This update focuses on the heart of the application: its ability to understand and analyze your scripts. We've made significant improvements to the core parsing engine to handle more complex scenarios and provide you with richer information.
- Enhanced "Chain Flow" View: The high-level execution view is now more robust. When you select a script in the chain, the new sidebar will instantly show you key metadata.
- Metadata Panel: Get immediate insights! The new panel displays a summary of the input tables, output tables, and the total number of transactions for the selected script, turning a simple diagram into a powerful analysis tool.
- Improved CTAS Parsing: The parser is now smarter and correctly identifies source tables in complex
CREATE TABLE AS SELECT
statements, providing a more accurate data lineage analysis.
These core improvements lay the groundwork for even more advanced analysis features to come.
Version 0.3: New Content Sections & A Major SEO Boost
More Content, Better Visibility
We're expanding the website to be more than just a tool—we want it to be a resource. This update introduces three new sections to keep you informed and help you get the most out of the visualizer.
- The Blog is Live: We've launched our official blog! Here we'll post updates, tutorials, and reflections on the development process and the world of data engineering.
- New FAQ Section: Have a question? We've created a Frequently Asked Questions page to provide quick answers to the most common queries.
- What's New Page: The very page you're reading! This section will be the definitive source for all future updates and version changes.
On the technical side, this version includes a major SEO overhaul, with optimized titles, meta descriptions, and a dynamic sitemap to help more people discover the tool through search engines.
Version 0.2: A Complete Visual Overhaul & Dark Mode
A Fresh New Look for a Better Experience
This update is all about improving your experience. We've completely redesigned the user interface from the ground up to be more intuitive, professional, and visually appealing. All visual components have been refactored for consistency, and we've introduced a unified header and footer across the entire application.
- Introducing Dark Mode: For those late-night analysis sessions, a beautiful and consistent dark mode is now available across the entire site, including the admin panel. Use the toggle in the header to switch themes!
- Custom Icons: We've replaced all generic diagram shapes with a custom-designed set of icons that share a cohesive visual style, making it easier to identify different operations at a glance.
Our goal is to make a tool that is not only powerful but also a pleasure to use.
